Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman Incident Summary

Recent activity in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman have seen a dramatic rise in tension between the Gulf States, Iran, The U.S. and Great Britain. A variety of attacks by unknown parties, responses and counter responses by Governments and Military and Ministerial spokes persons have all contributed to fuel uncertainty in the region. The deployment of Naval power to the region by the U.S. and UK in a bid to neutralise the tension between all the actors has done little more than fuel the fire.

Below are incidents recorded by the Securewest International Global Response Centre (GRC) from 15 April 2019 through to 15 July 2019, that have occurred within a 400 nm radius of Abu Dhabi. The area includes the recent activity in and around the Port of Fujairah, the sabotage of four vessels on 13 May 2019 in the port and the two oil tankers that were targeted off the coast of Iran on 13 June 2019. Since these incidents the situation in the region has continued to develop with the recent seizure of an Iranian tanker in the Strait of Gibraltar by the Gibraltar Government with the assistance of the UK Royal Navy and Royal Marines. This action has led to the subsequent harassment of British vessels in the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian boats believed to be operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
