Weekly Maritime Summary 7 - 13 October 2019

The Securewest Global Response Centre (GRC) recorded seven maritime related incidents and during the reporting period of 07 October to 14 October 2019.

Maritime Incidents

  • On 07-Oct-19 – Migrant and Refugee Incident - At least 13 people died when a boat carrying dozens of migrants sank off the coast of the island of Lampedusa, Italy.

  • On 08-Oct-19 - Robbery – Ships store robbed whilst anchored in port at Pointe Noire Anchorage, DRC.

  • On 12-Oct-19 – Boarding - An anchored vessel was boarded by robbers armed with guns and long knives; the robbers escaped with stolen ship's properties.

  • On 13-Oct-19 - Migrant and Refugee Incident - 74 migrants rescued about 50 miles off the Libyan coast near an oilfield.

  • On 13-Oct-19 - Migrant and Refugee Incident - 102 people aboard rubber boat rescued about 40 miles off the Libyan coast.

  • On 13-Oct-19 - Migrant and Refugee Incident - Two small boats carrying migrants reached Italian shores, one carrying 15 people, the other 11.

  • On 13-Oct-19 - Migrant and Refugee Incident - A boat with 15 Tunisians aboard landed in southern Sicily.


Boarding IconBoarding: Unauthorized boarding of a vessel by persons not part of its complement without successfully taking control of the vessel.

Migrants and refugee incidents Migrant and Refugee Incident: This could involve Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, or information about a boat capsizing and people drowning, or an attack on the group.

Robbery maritime incidentRobbery: Theft from a vessel or from persons aboard the vessel.
