Weekly Maritime Summary 2 – 8 March 2020

The Securewest Global Response Centre (GRC) recorded ten maritime related incidents during the reporting period of 2-8 March 2020:

  • 02-Mar-20 – General Security Warning – Canal de Panama issued an advisory regarding constraints on the maximum draft of vessels transitting Neopanamax locks
  • 03-Mar-20 – General Security Warning – UKMTO Watchkeeper Advisory 002/MAR/2020 – Fishing Vessels not under command in the Gulf of Aden
  • 03-Mar-20 – Approach – An MV underway was approached in the Gulf of Aden by 3 skiffs
  • 03-Mar-20 – Migrant and Refugee – Greek Coastguard fire shots towards Migrant and Refugee vessel crossing the Aegean Sea
  • 03-Mar-20 – Migrant and Refugee – Child died after boat capsized off the coast of Lesbos, Greece
  • 04-Mar-20 – Boarding – Two intruders attempted to board a vessel in the vicinity of Takradi, Ghana
  • 05-Mar-20 – Approach – An underwat MV was approached approximately 23nm SE of Lome, Togo
  • 05-Mar-20 – Attack – A vessel was attacked approximatel 46nm South of Cotonouu, Benin
  • 05-Mar-20 – Boarding – An underway MV was boarded approximately 80nm South of Lagos, Nigeria
  • 08-Mar-20 – General Security Warning – UKMTO Advisory 003/MAR/2020 – Numerous skiffs operating in the Gulf of Aden

Key:

Boarding IncidentBoarding: Unauthorized boarding of a vessel by persons not part of its complement without successfully taking control of the vessel.
Maritime warningGeneral Security Warning: Incidents which do not fit in the other categories, but enhance the    situational awareness, e.g. flag state advisories or an attack on a non- commercial vessel such as a warship
ApproachApproach: An incident where weapons are trained on the vessel or pirate paraphernalia such as weapons, ladders, are observed and the intention to conduct an attack is clear.
Migrant IncidentMigrant and Refugee Incident: This could involve Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, or information about a boat capsizing and people drowning, or an attack on the group.
